A Nurse’s Story

Antonella DeMarco, Allambie Heights Village

“Next year I will be here 20 years at Scalabrini Village Allambie Heights. I came to Australia from Calabria. I had two sisters and a brother living in Narraweena.

I arrived in 1994 and a week later Scalabrini Village opened. It was a beautiful new place. I started as a personal care assistant and now I am an AIN, Cert. 3 in Aged Care.

I enjoy my residents, my job and my staff. There are lots of staff from different cultures. It’s a very happy place to work. The managers here really care for you. They are very good.

Scalabrini has given me lots and lots of training. I’ve grown so much and have studied English at the TAFE. I’m feeling better about my English now.

I haven’t seen my country in 20 years. This is my second family. There is joy here. The residents love to hear my voice.”
