“The Daughters of St Anne is a missionary order. In 1990 we were called from Peru to come to Australia to assist Father Nevio and work as nurses at Scalabrini Village Griffith. The possibility of a new mission in Australia opened up my horizons.
I had been a missionary in Peru for 12 years. I have worked at Austral for the past 13 years, before that I was seven years in the Philippines and before that, two years in Scalabrini Village Austral.
Scalabrini is my home and the residents are my family. My work is pastoral care. My first love is working with the residents. I also love working with the staff and the outside community. We know the Italian culture; we know the need for a spiritual life of the residents.
When we start to say the rosary in the dementia section, all the residents go very quiet. They remember, they reminisce, they know.
We are here. 24 hours a day if necessary. We are only here. We help with everything. The residents trust us; they know we are here for them. The families know that.”
